Belt of Controversy

Description

Tooled, stamped, dyed & antiqued vegtan on a darker brown leather. It's 2.5 inches wide. Each panel is 3 inches wide by 2 inches high. Pyrography was also used to create the Ogham inscriptions. Areas that are somewhat distressed have also been sanded with really fine sandpaper and then sealed.

This is a belt I made for myself for LARP. It's called the belt of controversy because of the current political situation in that world, and the belt chronicles how things got that way. My character is the warleader/general for this country.

If you're really interested on what each panel means (from left to right), here's the run down:

The inscription in ogham: translates letter by letter into English to say "I saw, I conquered, I came."

Dragon's eye with mountains reflected: The dwarven hold of Borthawr (symbolised by 3 mountains) was destroyed by a great dragon that slept under them. Apparently he woke up when we destroyed the banner of the side that lost during the rebellion. Who knew it was *that* magical a banner? Oops.

Two broken crowns: Symbolic of the two kings that died during the final battle of the rebellion.

Broken banner: Yes, that banner. We won the battle, took their banner and destroyed it by flinging it into somewhere that turned out to be pretty destructive. We didn't know that doing that would destroy an entire country...

The triskele: The symbol of the rebellion, on which side my character stood. This symbol sits in the middle of the back when the belt is worn.

A broken spear: The gaebolg, the most powerful spear belonging to our country, shattered at the same time that the banner was destroyed.

A battle where one side is larger than the other: In the rebellion battle, around 50 people fought around 350-400 people. The 50 rebels won. The shields in the front lines are representative of particular units.

A broken link with ogham inscription: The link is representative of the chains that held the sleeping dragon breaking as he awoke. The ogham reads "I don't lose", which is a line my character said after declaring martial law once the battle had finished and the country had exploded a bit.

Final Ogham inscription: translates to "I am the right hand of vengeance" (if you get the rest of that quote, have 10 points).

I really quite enjoyed making this as it was the first kit I made for myself in over a year.

Where do you get your Ogham translations? I would really love to add Ogham into my works...

This is an awesome belt! I love the fact that it is a story belt. Seems very "traditional"... I can also see how it would be controversial... Very awesome.

What LARP do you run in? (I personally am currently in Amtgard...)
